Born and educated in the UK, Nick has been involved in international investment banking and asset management since 1986 with a well proven track record in fund management. Nick began his career in investment banking in 1986 with Nomura Securities, first in Tokyo and then in London. In 1992, he moved to Cape Town and completed an MBA at Cape Town University. As an investment consultant, he developed model portfolios based on investment trusts. Joining Appleton Asset Management as the senior fund manager in 1996 he was appointed as an investment representative, and given responsibility for the management of private client portfolios, pension funds and the top-performing Appleton Visionary Growth Fund, a unit trust which he started in 1998, also the top-performing fund in the “Domestic Growth” sector in 1998 and 1999. In 2001 he founded Overberg Asset Management.
Gielie has a B Comm (Acc) and MBA (Cum Laude), which he applies in conjunction with theories and skills gained from his vast experience, towards company research and financial analysis.
After completing his B Comm (Acc) at Stellenbosch University Gielie joined a firm of auditors in Stellenbosch to complete his auditing articles. This was followed by an MBA at Unisa, majoring in Advanced Financial Analysis and Applied Decision-Making models. Gielie joined his family hotel business in Caledon where he served the hotel industry and the Caledon community in various leadership capacities. At Overberg Asset Management Gielie applies his experience and skills towards company research and financial analysis.
Brett is responsible for client relations management on a national level. Each client will benefit from his personal service, which provides the link between client and asset manager, ensuring that the success of each portfolio is guaranteed. He also heads-up marketing and sales for the company on a national level. He has been with the company since 2008 at the Winelands office and more recently at the office in Johannesburg. He is now launching both a Durban and Nelspruit office.
As well as being educated in South Africa, Brett has lived in Australia, the US and UK, giving him a worldly grounding and outlook. After matriculating at Paarl Vallei School in Somerset West in 2004, Brett worked in the UK from 2004-2006 and ran his own company before joining Overberg Asset Management. Brett features regularly on sites such as Fin24, writing and providing feedback and has been interviewed on radio stations including 702 and Power FM.
Carel is a CFA charter holder with eight years financial services experience at the Barclays’ head office group finance department. He applies his analytical skills to asset management, data base management and client reporting. In addition he heads-up the Hermanus branch and provides client relationship management services in the Hermanus region.
After completing his B Comm (Institutional Investments) at Stellenbosch University and B Comm Hons (Financial Analysis and Portfolio Management) at Cape Town University Carel successfully passed his CFA exams with first-time passes to become a CFA charter holder in 2010.
Kirk is a bright young economist who has an exceptional knowledge of financial markets and investments with over three years’ experience in economic modelling at the Western Cape Treasury. Prior to working at the Treasury Kirk was an accounting tutor and economic assistant at Stellenbosch University. He applies his analytical skills to asset management. In addition he provides client relationship management services in the Cape Town and Winelands region.
After completing his M Comm (Economics) at Stellenbosch University Kirk embarked on further studies and passed his CFA level 1 examination in 2014.
Natalie is the Financial Manager for Overberg Asset Management and heads-up administration at the Winelands office, applying her wealth of experience and qualifications to these responsibilities. She has worked previously as chief financial officer and as a member of the executive and investment committees of private companies in the financial services industry in South Africa. In addition, she worked in London in the asset management industry during 1999 after spending two years with Standard Equities in Johannesburg.
After completing her B Comm (Economics and Business Economics) at the University of Port Elizabeth, Natalie furthered her education in the financial services industry with the International Capital Markets Qualification from the London Securities Institute. She also qualified as a Member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and passed the Insurance Institute of South Africa’s exams, short-term insurance 1&2 and reinsurance 1.
